Abstract

Over the years, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) have included rural development as one of the UNSDG indicators. Rural development is important, especially for developing countries with higher rural population. Limited existing literature focus on the underlying indicators in developing a smart and resilience rural. Therefore, this study aims to identify the underlying indicators of smart rural and rural resilience between two rural categories in Sarawak based on the rural communities’ perspective. Likert-Scale questionnaires were distributed to seven village communities. This yields a total of 675 valid responses. The study demonstrates that rural categories significantly influence the perceived underlying indicators, emphasising the need for specific strategies to address development gaps between the different rural categories. Adaptive rural policies are needed to cater different characteristics of rural areas to close the rural development gaps.
